Thekkady

I am still recuperating, but everyone else enjoyed a boat cruise on Lake Periyar. Periyar, covering an area of 300 square miles, is one of the largest wildlife preserves in India. They saw wildboar, water buffalo, black and brown monkeys and many birds.

In the evening we went to see Kathakali Dance put on by the locals. Kathakali, literally meaning 'story-play' is a dance-drama originated in the 17th century in Kerala, one of the smallest states in India lying on the west coast of the Indian peninsula. Scholars are of the opinion that Kathakali is the result of a Indian theatre tradition represented by Koodiyattom and the indigenous tradition of folk dance forms.
