Meenakshi Temple
The highlight of today was visiting the Meenakshi Temple. It is one of the largest temples in India as well as one of the oldest and it is a significant symbol for the Tamil people. It has grown bigger with the contributions of each dynasty and now extends over an area of 65 000 square meters. This temple is dedicated to Shiva and his consort, Parvati. Once again we had a extremely knowledgeable guide who taught us so much. The South Tower is the largest and it has 1 500 statues. There is grain stored at the top of the towers in case of a natural disaster and the grain is replinished every 12 years when they repaint the temple. 15 000 people visit the temple every day and 25 000 on Fridays.
